But to achieve the second option, you must first draw a structured tree of the different categories to define the position and type of each.

Creating a “Parent” category

As the name implies, it’s the main or basic category with subcategories and, in particular, not dependent on another category.. For example, let’s create a category of men’s clothes and accessories, we’ll call it “Men”. The category creation page contains 4 fields, some of which are mandatory.

  1. The category name : “Men”  It’s a required field.
  2. The parent category : you must skip this field because it’s a main category.
  3. The overview of the category : Here, you can download a representative image of the category.
  4. The category description : Here, you can add a description of the category.

Once you’re done, you can use the tree available buttons :

  1. “Save” button, which save the category and allow you to proceed with the data entry.
  2. “Save and go back to the list” button, which save the category and takes you back to the categories list.
  3. And “Cancel” button, which reset the form and takes you to the categories list.

Once on the “Categories List”, you can check that the category has been saved. Enter it in the search bar and click on the“Search” button. You’ll find the new category created with all his characteristics.

Creating a “Child” category

“Child” category is a descendant subcategory of the “Parent” category. But assuming a structured tree of categories, a child category can become the parent category of one or more other children categories and so on. The “Parent” category and the “Child” category follow the same creation process with one difference. Indeed, the “Parent category” field becomes mandatory for a child category. For example, let’s continue the creation of our tree of categories by creating a child category named “Pants” for the main category “Men“.
